Small french art deco ceramic encaustic floor c.1930
A small, 2.5m2, art deco ceramic encaustic floor of 14cm square tiles framed by half size borders dating from the early 1930's. The floors palette is black, white, mid blue and light grey. It is one of two small floors of the same theme and palette reclaimed from the washrooms of a house in La Garenne Colombes, Paris. Both floors may be joined to create a larger surface but would require a plain tile or antique parquet to separate the four tile motifs as while the designs are complimentary they do not fit directly side by side. We have simulated how this may look with a plain antique white tile, for example, in a photograph below.
The tiles have cleaned very well and are in good condition. A small number bear groubtable small chips and edge nibbles but the slip is deep and the ceramic is excellent. Being ceramic they can be laid inside or outside of the home and as efficient conductors and retainers of heat may be used with underfloor heating systems.
