A small antique French ceramic in an English Gothic tradition
In a warm palette of terracotta and mustard a reclaimed and now fully restored French ceramic encaustic tile, influenced in design by the English gothic revival tradition.
Both the field tile and border tile were produced in Maubeuge, northern France in the early part of the twentieth century; the principal field tiles are 14.3cm square, 15mm thick and were produced by Manufactures Ceramiques de Maubeugeand the 15cm square, 17mm thick border tile by Produits Ceramiques Maubeuge, Douzies Maubeuge.
We include a scan from the original Maubeuge catalogue in our possession showing the original presentation of the border tiles.
The tiles have cleaned very well, some amongst the field tiles displaying some tonal variations in the terracotta colour owing to their handmade production in small batches. There are some with edge nibbles, small groutable chips but this is a warm and detailed floor that will be the hero in its period setting.
