Small antique French carreaux de ciments floor – linked rings
8m2+ / 85 sq ft of French carreaux de ciments floor tiles reclaimed from the hallway of a house in Dijon, Burgundy.
The design is classical in a theme of repeating crosses linked by circles. The same size border tiles are more fluid in design and add a greyish olive green to a palette which is principally a monochrome of black and off-white.
Two photographs of the floor pre-lifting are included below, as is a section of the floor photographed in high resolution to provide more detail. The tiles, which are 20cm sq (8 inches), have been cleaned of their old lime based mortar and the wax evident on the floor pre-lifting has also been removed. They arrive in their matt state, ready to re-lay and seal or wax again once posed.
The floor has a beautiful antique patina with some tiles displaying small chips and a surface crackling.
There are c.150 field tiles (6m2) and 52 border tiles plus 3 corner tiles for the borders (2.2m2 or 11 linear metres / 36 linear feet), one of which as a chip of significance. Replacement border corners can easily be mitre cut from existing border tiles.
