A small, 7.5m2 / 80 sq ft, antique Belgian ceramic encaustic floor

A small and elegant Belgian ceramic floor reclaimed from a town house in Etricourt-Manancourt in the Somme, northern France. The floor was manufactured by Carrelages Céramiques de Chimay, Maufroid  & Soeur, Rue Poncet, Bourlers, Henegouwen, Belgium, who later became: S.A. La Céramique de Bourlers. Maufroid Freres et Soeur traded as such between 1879 and 1912 and the tiles display on their reverse the Maufroid rings and centralised 'M'.

The 16.5 cm square, 15mm thick tiles provide a total surface of 7.5m2+, offering up a classical tessellation of circles anchored by a fake cabachons, or tile inserts, in amber and sky blue. The palette is otherwise cool in tones of grey and off-white. The same size border tile, for which all four corners are present, is of a lozenge theme and in the same colour palette. Years of old wax and dirt have been cleaned from the tiles which now reveal a lovely time aged patina; some tiles displaying small groutable chips and edge nibbles but every tile has been quality controlled for its robustness and the ceramic, as would be expected of this heritage producer, is excellent. We include around 40 reject field tiles (1m2+) free, which can be used for cuts or if you are looking for a richly patinated floor can simply be laid and have their chips grouted in, its your choice.

Being a highly fired tile the floor can be laid inside or outside of the home and will distribute and retain heat effectively with underfloor heating systems.
