A most unusual and unique Maubeuge ceramic c.15m2
A most unusual find, a French ceramic floor of 14.2cm square tiles with their same size borders
In a cool palette of primarily greens and greys, the floor was manufactured by Compagnie Francaise de Mosaique Ceramique du Maubeuge Usine de Landrecies.
We include a scan of the tiles from the original catalogue in our possession and we would date the floor between 1920 and 1935
The tiles have cleaned superbly of their old mortar and years of wax and reveal a good quality ceramic of c.15mm thickness. While the pattern on first inspection suggests a free form design, on further investigation there is a tessellation to the pattern.
We have recovered the original borders with the tiles and although there are no border corners, these can be created by mitre cutting a regular border tile
Highly fired, the tiles can be laid inside or outside of the home and given the palette and design could provide a unique and practical statement in a conservatory, patio or summer house
Surface area is 15m2 / sq ft / 160 sq ft.
