A most unusual and unique Maubeuge ceramic c.15m2

A most unusual find, a French ceramic floor of 14.2cm square tiles with their same size borders

In a cool palette of primarily greens and greys, the floor was manufactured by Compagnie Francaise de Mosaique Ceramique du Maubeuge Montplaisir (MCM), a company founded in 1905

We would date the floor between 1930 and 1950

The tiles have cleaned superbly of their old mortar and years of wax and reveal a good quality ceramic of c.15mm thickness. While the pattern on first inspection suggests a free form design, on further investigation there is a tessellation to the pattern.

We have recovered the original borders with the tiles and although there are no border corners, these can be created by mitre cutting a regular border tile

Highly fired, the tiles can be laid inside or outside of the home and given the palette and design could provide a unique and practical statement in a conservatory, patio or summer house

Surface area is 15m2 /  sq ft / 160 sq ft.
