Large 20.5m2/220 sq ft period ceramic floor in grey and green
A beautiful Belgian ceramic encaustic floor manufactured by Carrelages Céramiques de Chimay, Maufroid Freres & Soeur, Rue Poncet, Bourlers, Henegouwen, Belgium, who later became: S.A. La Céramique de Bourlers. Maufroid Freres et Soeur traded as such between 1879 and 1912 and the tiles display on their reverse the Maufroid rings and centralised 'M'. Totalling 20.5m2 / 220 sq ft these period ceramic tiles, 16cm sq and 15mm thick have been reclaimed with their original same size back to back border tiles for which the full contingent of four internal and four external border corners are available.
The palette is cool in mid grey, off-white and leaf green and the design of the principal field tile is bold and striking across its four tile tessellation. The same size borders mirror the main field tile in design but also create the impression of two half size borders being present, top and tailing. The floor has cleaned well of its old wax and lime based mortar; the faces show no signs of wear, the slip is deep with consistant colours and the ceramic in excellent condition as the photographs show. A small number of tiles display groutable edge nibbles expected of a floor of between 108 years and 141 years old. Being a highly fired tile it can be laid inside or outside of the home as high summer and sub zero temperatures will have no effect on the ceramic. They will also work most efficiently with under floor heating systems.
We are delighted to have reclaimed the full length of border tiles, some 170, offering a total linear length, including the corner pieces, of 28.5 linear metres for a single tile lay and 14.25 linear metres for a back to back lay, as shown in the photographs.
