Impressive Belgian/French period entrance hall floor – 10m2 / 107 sq ft

A turn of the century 10m2 mosaic styled ceramic encaustic floor taking from the best of geometrical design. The floor has been recovered from the entrance hall of a house in Vise, Belgium.

The floor uses three separate tiles in a repeating internal frame tessellation; an ornate primrose blue and white field tile with beige piping which is marked H, the inscription for Belgian ceramic tile manufacturer Gilliot Hemiksem. The tile is laid in a series of four to produce a striking centralising motif. This motif is framed by two secondary same size tiles, made in France by Winklemans; one of a strong linear geometry which frames the motif top and sides and a third tile of a fluid, round design bedding the corners. The warm burnt red and yellows of both of the framing tiles, along with their dark grey piping complement the central motif beautifully.

The tiles, which are 15.2cm square, have cleaned very well and arrive ready to re-lay having had old lime based mortar removed. They display occasional small chips and nibbles expected of a floor more than 100 years old but the tiles are more than 1.5cm thick and of a good ceramic. The colours, as can be evidenced in the high resolution photographs, are crisp.

The floor would look particularly attractive in a wide entrance hall, as a kitchen feature or in a re-laid in a large bathroom.
