An impressive 11.75 m2 antique Belgian Art Nouveau floor
We are happy to present a quite stunning Belgian ceramic encaustic floor dated c.1910, complete with the original matching double border tiles.
The floor has been recovered from a period property in the old city of Charleroi in Belgium. The floral themed 15cm sq tiles are exquisitely detailed and the design bears all the DNA of art nouveau styling. The palette is cool in sky blue with mid grey and leaf green present. The double border tile configuration is again of a floral theme and takes design references from the field tile, most notably in the leaf band.
The tiles are in very good condition, each has been quality controlled at various stages of the restoring process when old mortar has been removed from the back and sides of the tiles one by one and their faces cleaned of years of old dirt and wax. Some display nibbles and small chips but any tiles with a larger chip have been rejected and will be supplied free for use as halves or offcuts.
The floor totals 11.75 m2 / 126 sq ft in surface and the high resolution photographs are of a random samples of the floor and as such are representative of the whole.
Being ceramic encaustic and fired to a high temperature the floor can be laid inside or outside making it ideal also for a patio or a summer house (where the floral theme would superbly link house and garden) or a garden path, in a conservatory etc. Should it be chosen for inside the house it can be laid on top of an underfloor heating system as the tiles are excellent conductors and retainers of heat.
Tile quantities, give or take one or two:-
FIELD TILES – 375 - 8.45 m2 / 91 sq ft
BORDER TILES – 138 - 3.1 m2 / 33.4 sq ft or 21 linear metres / 68.9 linear feet*
* Halve the linear lengths for a back to back border tile lay as shown in the photographs.
* plus 4 internal and 4 external border corner tiles
We will be happy to assist in evaluating the best layout for this floor in your chosen room.
