Classical antique French floor tiles c.1900

Large antique French ceramic encaustic floor dating from 1900 complete with same size duplicate border tiles. The floor tiles are 14cm sq (5 1/2 inches) and the floors surface area is more than 17m2 / 180 sq ft.

This is a beautifully tessellating floor in a geometric repetition of diamonds with central vegetal bordered motifs. The aqua greens and blues on cream are complemented by wheat-grey and burgundy. While classical and pure in its tessellation its exquisite but subtle French styling can be seen at a glance…... and the more you look the more you see. As the French say, ’....Less is More’.

There are 8 corner tiles in total of two separate designs, four for the internal border and four for the external border. A couple of the corners have chips or are damaged but are re-usable. The tiles are 14cm sq (5 1/2 inches sq).
