Beautiful period French ceramic encaustic floor with original triple border tiles
A 9m2+ antique ceramic encaustic French floor complete with its original same size and half size border tiles, which are laid in duplicate. This is a beautifully tessellating floor in a geometric repetition of diamonds with a central vegetal bordered motif. The palette is excellent for distributing light; aqua greens and blues on off-white are complemented by light grey and burgundy. The large borders, on a fond of light grey, are strongly geometric framed by a simple chain link themed double half size border tile. Ornate but also classical, this is unmistakingly French and the styling an endorsement of the French expression that 'less is more'.
The floor is one of two reclaimed from the reception rooms of a town house in Mericourt, Nord Pas de Calais, the floors date from between 1900 and 1905.
Manufactured by Societe Morialme the tiles are 14cm square and +/- 1.25cm thick, with half size borders 14cm x 7cm. Being ceramic encaustic and highly fired the tiles are excellent conductors and retainers of heat and can be used very efficiently with underfloor heating systems. Once laid they do not require sealing and only a regular wash to maintain their beauty.
