Beautiful floral themed Douvrin ceramic floor – c.8m2 - early 20th century

A beautiful ceramic encaustic period floor produced by Compagnie Construction de Fours, Ceramiques de Douvrin in the early 20th century. The floor, one of two, has been recovered from the renovation of a town house in the ville of Verton in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of northern France. The second can be found in the link below.

There are two main 14.2cm square field tiles; one forming a floral themed motif across a four tile tessellation and the second a four flower headed single tile taking from the same theme and palette of white and peach and introducing an aqua blue to compliment the warm sky blue of the motif field tile. We have included a scan of the presentation page of the period Ceramiques de Douvrin catalogue we have. The original border tiles are present; one a same size tile on a sky blue slip, embracing art nouveau styling, and the second a half size bar themed border. Owing to the handmade production process at the time there is some colour variation in the burgundy of the half size borders, adding to their charm. Having cleaned well the floor reveals a rich antique patina expected of a floor of this age; the ceramic is excellent, 15mm thick and there are groutable edge nibbles and small chips on some tiles as can be evidenced in the high resolution photographs below. A tile fired to over 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit it can be laid inside or outside of the home.

Motif field tiles - 130 – 2.65m2 / 28.5 sq ft

Floral field tiles – 90 – 1.8m2 / 19.8 sq. ft.

Large border tiles - 135 – 2.75m2 / 29.6 sq ft or 18.9 linear metres / 62 linear ft

Small border tiles - 70 plus 8 corners – 0.76m2 / 8.1 sq ft or 10 linear metres / 32.8 linear ft.
