Antique ceramic black and white floor tiles c.1905
15.75m2 / 170 sq ft of antique black and white ceramic tiles measuring 16cm sq / 6 inches sq. marked ‘Ceramiques Jurbise’, named after the small municipality in the Hainaut province of Belgium. The tiles have been removed from the entrance hallway of a large house in Brussels and have been cleaned of old lime-based mortar to the back and sides and a pressure steam cleaning has removed layers of old wax and dirt. The white tiles have cleaned beautifully. The photographs show the floors original configuration – a striking difference to a traditional chessboard layout. Owing to this layout there are more black tiles than white – 8.5m2 to 5.75m2, so if a traditional chessboard presentation (the photograph with the four tiles laid out) is preferred this needs to be borne in mind.
The floor is sold with a half size ceramic encaustic border tile, for which there are 130 pieces, totaling more than 19 linear metres.
