An 8m2+ antique Belgian Morialme ceramic
Manufactured in the early part of the 20th century by Societe Anonyme Carreaux Ceramiques de Morialme, an antique Belgian ceramic floor.
The floor surface totals 8m2+/86 sq ft and comes with its original triple border tile series in a theme of thistles and mistletoe. The principal field tiles and large borders are 14cm square and the half size borders 14cm x 7cm. All 4 large border corner tiles and 8 small border corner tiles are present.
The floor has been fully restored, arrives ready to relay and is in excellent condition; a small number of tiles display small groutable chips or edge nibbles but the high-resolution photographs in the gallery are of a randomly selected section of the floor and are representative of the whole. We also include scans from the original Morialme catalogue showing the tiles.
Tile quantities: -
Field tiles – 210 – 4.1m2 / 44 sq ft.
Large borders – 95 plus 4 corners – 2m2 / 21.5 sq ft. – 13.9 linear metres / 45.5 linear ft.
Small borders – 190 plus 8 corners – 1.9m2 / 20.5 sq ft. – 27.2 linear metres / 89 linear ft.
NOTE
Antique tiles were most commonly made in single or two tile moulds. Before current computer automation methods their moulds were made my hand and the colour slips mixed by eye. Kiln temperatures could also be variable, as could the firing time. The result is that often tiles display subtle size and thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colours, owing to the slip mixing and/or firing time. All of this makes these handmade tiles unique and adds to their charm. Some floors display their subtle variations in size and tones, some not, but when photographing we always take a random section of the floor so that it is representative of the whole. A tiler should always dry lay a section of the tiles to familiarise himself with them before starting to fix lay.
