7m2 Lily themed antique French Maubeuge ceramic
One of three antique ceramic floors reclaimed from the same town house in Saint-Laurent-Blagny, close to the city of Arras in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France. This ceramic floor was manufactured by Produits de Ceramiques, Maubeuge in the early twentieth century and consists of a 15cm square field tile and a half size border. We have shown the half size borders laid as two options, horizontally or vertically.
Totalling 7m2 / 75 sq ft this is a bold floor in a palette of tangerine, green, mid grey and white. The design detail is impressive, anchored in a lily theme opening up across a four tile tessellation.
The floor has cleaned superbly revealing a quality, thick ceramic of 15mm (each tile is close to a kilo in weight), consistent colours and a deep slip. The beautiful patina is what to expect of a floor close to 100 years old; rich with the occasional tiles bearing groutable edge nibbles but this is a quality, robust ceramic with each tile individually having been quality controlled and arriving ready to relay.
A highly fired ceramic, it can be laid inside or outside of the home and the rich design cries out for it to be the hero in a room.
We think it would work particularly well in a bathroom or, owing to its floral and vegetal theme, in a conservatory.
The high resolution photographs are of a randomly selected section of the floor.
