A 7.5m2+ antique Societe Amay triple border ceramic

A triple border antique Belgian ceramic in a cool palette now restored to its original beauty,

Manufactured in the early twentieth century by Societe Anonyme AMAY, Belgique, we include in the photo gallery some scans of the tile from their original catalogue.

This ceramic encaustic floor consists of a principal field tile and same size border tile, framed by a half size border laid in duplicate. All four large and eight corner tiles are present and correct.

The surface area of the floor is c.7.5m2+ / 88 sq. ft+. We have a further 90 of the large borders so there is the potential to increase the area to c.9.5m2 / 102 sq ft.*

Both the principal field tiles and large borders are 14cm sq and the half size lattice themed borders are 14cm x 7cm. The tiles are 15mm thick.

The design is strongly vegetal; a popular theme in the early twentieth century and in this instance embracing thistle leaves on the principal field tile and what appears to be holly on the large borders. Within the main part of the floor a circular motif opens up across four tiles, linking the thistle themed tessellation. We think the vegetal theme and palette lend themselves perfectly to relaying the floor in a room linking home with garden and optionally, given the tiles were highly fired and are resistant to high summer and sub zero winter temperatures, the floor can be laid outside on a garden path, in a conservatory or summer house.

Arriving ready to relay, the condition of these tiles is excellent; there are occasional small chips and edge nibbles on a small number of tiles, all grout-able, but each tile has been individually quality controlled both during the removal of the old mortar, grout, surface dirt and waxes during the restoration process. The high resolution photographs are a randomly selected section of the total floor.

The tiles will work very efficiently with underfloor heating systems.

Tile quantities, give or take one or two:-

FIELD -  275 tiles – 5.4m2 /  58 sq. ft

LARGE BORDERS - 65 tiles (plus 4 corners) – 1.35m2 /  14.5 sq.ft or 9.7 linear metres or  31.8 linear ft

SMALL BORDERS - 120 (plus 8 corners) - 1.2m2 / 12.9 sq ft. or 17.4 linear metres or 57 linear ft.
