6.5m2 antique ceramic floor tiles in cool tones pre-1912

A small, antique ceramic floor with its original same size border tiles totaling, in surface, 6.5m2. The tiles bear the reverse inscription rings and stamped 'M' identifying the floor as having been produced by Carrelages Céramiques de Chimay, Maufroid Freres & Soeur, Rue Poncet, Bourlers, Henegouwen, Belgium, who later became: S.A. La Céramique de Bourlers. Maufroid Freres et Soeur traded as such between 1879 and 1912, so the tiles were produced pre-1912.

Both the main field tile and large border tiles are 16cm sq (6 1/4 inches) and tessellate in a classically geometric design of an anchored mid-blue and white jewel motif framed by charcoal and white piping on a mid grey tile background. The same size borders are more ornate in a linked chain design, again offering mid blue, black and greys. The floor has cleaned very well with the tiles displaying crisp and consistent colours; some tiles display groutable edge nibbles, expected of a floor over 100 years old and others small capillary cracks formed when the tiles left the kiln and were cooling but the ceramic is excellent and there is no surface wear.

The full contingent of 4 large border corner tiles are present.
