6.5m2 / 70 sq ft exterior ceramic tiles c.1896
6.5m2 of antique ceramic tiles manufactured by Villeroy & Boch in Sinzig, Germany in 1896, recovered from a house in renovation in the cathedral city of Bourges, France
The tiles are 17cm square, 24mm thick and weigh 1.4 kilos each
With a surface in relief to assist with foot traction they form a classical damier although they can be laid in more than one way as we have shown in the photograph gallery
A scan from the period Sinzig catalogue in our possession shows the tiles, dating them to 1896.
The tiles were handmade and there is subtle variations in the tile size as well as tonal variations in the slip from a cream to white, against the grey. We have shown a random section of the floor so the tones can be seen. Having cleaned well the floor has a rich patina and charm. The thickness, weight and relief surface all end themselves to a robust, durable and practical lay along an entrance path, on a patio, in summer room or conservatory.
