5m2 antique Belgian wall faience - late 19th century

5m2 of antique faience reclaimed from a Maison Maitre in the Belgian city of Charleroi, we show as the last two images in the photo gallery photographs of the tiles before they were demounted.

The tiles are one of two sets of faience reclaimed from the same house and details on the other set can be found if you click here

A highly fired and glazed tile there is the inevitable reflection and glare that is unavoidable when photographing. The reverse of the tile shows the motif of Gilliot & Cie, Hemiksem, Belgium. More information on this period faience producer and their outstanding work can be found if you click here

In the gallery we also display a photograph showing the inventory of the tiles; the size and number of tiles by tile type that are available.

As was generally common practice, faience was posed to a height of c.100 cm / 39 inches, but it can be configured in many ways should, for example, the intention be to use it as a kitchen splashback or in a chimney inglenook or fire surround.

The faience has been cleaned of its old cements to the reverse and sides but we have not cleaned the surface of the tiles. Faience, being only c.5mm thick, is fragile and the best way to clean the tiles is after they have been posed. Cleaning can be done quickly and easily with a ceramic detergent, warm water and a sponge. Faience is a glazed tile, with no surface porosity, so dirt is easy to clean from their surface.

It is likely that it will only be economically viable (and secure against breakage) for the faience to be shipped as part of a larger order inside an insulated box pallet but we are receptive to other options you may have like collection or arranging your own transport.
