26.75m2 complete, handmade Sand & Cie French floor c.1900 – Stunning detail
A magnificently detailed antique French floor, complete with its original triple border tile series, manufactured by Sand & Cie in the early part of the 20th century. Along with the high resolution photographs of a large laid out section below we have also included a scan from the original Sand and Cie catalogue showing the floor, which was reclaimed from the dining room of a large period house in Beauvais, Picardie, some 80 kms north of Paris.
The ceramic of these 15.5cm sq tiles is superb, the slip deep and the colours crisp. The complex design is exquisite with the tessellation of the two main interlocked tiles producing rich contrasting but harmonising motifs within which some of the detail is reaching air brush quality standard. The floor is framed by a triple border; a plain predominantly cream half size tile which is laid in duplicate either side of an ornate large border tile of stunning design and detail.
The floor has been completely restored and arrives ready to relay. Lime based mortar has been removed from the reverse and sides of the tiles and old wax and dirt from their faces. Being ceramic encaustic the tiles can be laid inside or outside of the house; in the garden, on a patio, conservatory or entrance path. They are excellent conductors and retainers of heat, so well suited to work with under-floor heating systems.
We will be happy to assist in evaluating the fit of the floor for your chosen area.
