24m2+ antique Belgian ceramic 1918 with a mid century modern feel
While creatively invoking a mid century modern aesthetic this antique Belgian ceramic, manufactured by Ceramiques de Bourlers, Anciennes Usine de Maufroid, Belgique, is actually dated earlier, in 1918.
The palette on this large 24.7m2 / 266 sq ft floor is cool, the design pure and the inter-locking back to back border with its lovely corner configuration frames the field tiles impressively. All of the borders corner tiles are present.
The ceramic is excellent on these 14.1cm square, 13mm thick tiles and they will work very efficiently with modern underfloor heating systems.
Tile quantities by tile type:-
Field tiles - 970 - 19m2 / 205 sq ft
Large border tiles - 275 plus 4 internal and 4 external corners - 5.7m2 / 61 sq ft - 40 linear metres / 132 linear feet
NOTE
Antique tiles were most commonly made in single or two tile moulds. Before current computer automation methods their moulds were made my hand and the colour slips mixed by eye. Kiln temperatures could also be variable, as could the firing time. The result is that often tiles display subtle size and thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colours, owing to the slip mixing and/or firing time. All of this makes these handmade tiles unique and adds to their charm. Some floors display their subtle variations in size and tones, some not, but when photographing we always take a random section of the floor so that it is representative of the whole. A tiler should always dry lay a section of the tiles to familiarise himself with them before starting to fix lay.
