21m2 / 225 sq ft Art Nouveau French ceramic encaustic floor with original borders

A large and impressive French art nouveau floor reclaimed from a village house close to Aumerval in Nord Pas de Calais and now restored to its original beauty. 

The floor was manufactured at L'Usine de Montplaisir, Maubeuge in the early part of the twentieth century and we have included a scan below of the tile in their original catalogue. The principal field tile and large border are both 14.5cm sq and the large border is complimented by a half size border tile. Laid in duplicate, back to back, this is one of the most superbly designed and detailed borders we have come across. Embracing art nouveau styling in a strongly floral and vegetal theme the palette is cool; the main fond of the tile is leaf green but amber, blue, white, charcoal and burnt red are all present. The ceramic is excellent and the design, of what appears to be corn flowers growing amongst sheaves of corn heads, has almost a hand painted uniqueness and quality to it as it opens across its four tile tessellation. 

The floor has cleaned superbly and arrives ready to relay. There are a very small number of tiles with edge nibbles or small groutable chips but the condition of the floor is excellent. Being a highly fired tile it can be laid inside or outside of the home and will work most efficiently with underfloor heating systems. All 4 internal and 4 external large border corners are present and there are all 8 small border corners, some of which have been mitre cut.

Field tile –  690 tiles - 14.5m2 / 156 sq ft

Large borders – 200 tiles 4.2m2 / 45 sq ft or 15 linear metres / 49.2 linear feet (laid in duplicate)

Small borders – 200 tiles - 2.1m2 / 23 sq ft or 15.6 linear metres / 49.2 linear feet (laid in duplicate)

Large border corners – 4 internal and 4 external tiles

Small border corners – 4 internal and 4 external tiles
