1.8m2, small antique French ceramic floor c.1900

A small, 1.8m2, ceramic encaustic floor produced by Perusson of Burgundy, a period ceramic and roof tile manufacturer whose factory remnants can still be seen at the side of the Canal de Bourgogne in the Saone and Loire department of France. The floor has been reclaimed from the bathroom of renovation in St Marcel, close to Chalon-sur-Saone in Burgundy, France.These are a pretty floral themed tile of exquisite detailing in a palette of burnt orange, off-white, burgundy and blue. Manufactured of gres cerame and fired to over 1,100 degrees, they are also a large tile at 17cm sq and over 1.25cm thick.

The tiles have cleaned very well, revealing a charming time worn patina but not at the expense of what is still an excellent ceramic and slip colours as sharp as they were when fired decades ago. Options lend themselves for relaying in a small bathroom, toilet, entrance porch as a 'carpet' style feature in a larger room framed by a warm hardwood or complimentary plain tile. Being highly fired they will work very efficiently with underfloor heating systems and can also be laid outside, where they will be resistant to any effects of high or sub-zero temperatures.
