17m2 Belgian classical geometry c.1895
An antique Belgian ceramic encaustic floor dated c.1895 totalling 17m2, 185 sq ft, complete with its same size back to back border
The floor was taken from the hallway of a large Brussels house and both the main field tiles and the border tiles are 15cm sq (just under 6 inches) and 1.5cm (+ 1/2 inch) thick
Tessellating in a classical geometric design centered on a blue diamond motif backed by mid grey and charcoal linking, the main field tiles are complimented by a richer and more fluid border in the same palette
The tiles are reverse stamped PCSR having been produced by Societe Anonyme Produits Ceramiques St Remy-Chimay, a heritage Belgian ceramic producer established close to the Belgian city of Chimay. A photograph of the tile factory, now long since closed is shown as well as two scans from their original catalogue showing the field tiles and borders.
The floor has been cleaned of its old lime based mortar to the back and sides and the faces have had their old wax and dirt removed. The floor displays a rich antique patina; edge nibbles and small chips, all groutable, are evident. Owing to the labour intensive handmade production method of making the tiles in two tile moulds there is some tonal variation in the colour of the tiles. We have provided an example of this by photographing two tiles alongside each other and zooming in on the other photographs will show this charming aspect in its larger context
Being a highly fired tile it can be laid inside or outside of the home as the ceramic is resistant to high summer and sub zero temperatures
