1.6m2, small antique Winckelmans floor with ornate borders
A small, 1.6m2, French ceramic encaustic floor, manufactured by Winckelmans, and consisting of a star linked field tile and an ornate same size border, which can either be laid singularly or back to back as a double tile series. The floor, which is reverse stamped B&W has been reclaimed from the entrance porch of a village house in Lacres, Nord Pas de Calais, which was built in 1892, although we would date the tiles at between 1925-1935.
Having been totally cleaned and arriving ready to relay, the tiles display a pleasing aged patina but their general condition is good; a small number bear groutable chip and nibbles as the high resolution photographs show. The palette is subtle in greys and aubergine and this little floor would say a lot for itself as a feature in a larger room or relaid inside a porch, small bathroom, a toilet, within a chimney or Aga inglenook or as a garden feature, where they could be used without any risk from high summer temperatures or sub zero winters.
