16.25m2+ of antique Douzies Maubeuge tiles in a warm palette
16.25m2+ / 175 sq ft French ‘Douzies Maubeuge’ ceramic encaustic floor dated c.1915-1920. Both the field and border tiles are 15cm sq (nearly 6 inches) and 1.5cm thick. The floor is a classical tessellation in a warm palette containing reds, yellows and primrose blue on an off white background. The two motif tessellation links a blue square backed open flower with a charcoal coloured ‘scrolled ironwork’ cross. The oval themed borders, principally in burgundy are warm and borrow from the floors palette.
The ornate border tiles can be used in several ways; as a double lay to the floor sides should it be used, for example, in a hallway i.e. the tiles keying to the skirting or as a single lay framing the whole floor and with sufficient border tiles to create a central border feature within the floor.
The floor was reclaimed from a Town House close to Longwy in France and has had its old lime based mortar removed from the back and sides of the tiles. These are a quality ceramic, in good condition, and have cleaned beautifully to reveal a good slip and vibrant colours.
