15m2 Antique Belgian ceramic encaustic floor - early 20th century
A 15m2+ / 160 sq ft ceramic encaustic floor, complete with original triple border tile configuration, reclaimed from a town house in Avesnes-les-Aubert in the Nord department of France. The floor was produced by Belgian tile manufacturer Gilliot Hemiksem in the early part of the 20th century and the 14cm sq tiles are reverse stamped with the Hemiksem ‘H’.
The palette is in muted colours of grey and teal blue on a white fond with tangerine piping around one of the two main motifs. While the pattern is ornate it is also strongly geometric. The tiles are in good condition, a small number bearing edge nibbles but any with chips are supplied free for use as offcuts or at your own discretion. The floor has cleaned well of its old mortar and wax, revealing a good quality ceramic and slip. Being ceramic encaustic the tiles can be laid inside or outside, where high summer and sub zero winter temperatures will not damage the tiles, and they can also be used with underfloor heating systems as they are excellent retainers of heat. Once laid, they do not require sealing as a regular washing is sufficient to retain their beauty. A waxing is optional should you prefer a finish with a satin sheen.
