15m2 / 160 sq ft Belgian antique ceramic tile - 1900-1925
A 15m2 / 160 sq ft Belgian antique ceramic tile reclaimed from the entrance hall of a house in renovation in Wasnes-Au-Bac in the Nord department of northern France. The tiles are 14.3cm square, 15mm thick and were laid with two different half size border tiles, both sharing the same green and grey palette but one lattice themed and one a free-form motif. The main field tile, which has a distinctly modern feel, is reverse stamped 'CNW'. The inscription ‘CNW’ is an abbreviation for ‘Societe Anonyme Le Ceramique National, Welkenraedt’, a company established at Forges-les-Chimay in 1892 which later opened a subsidiary in Welkenraedt in 1900. The Welkenraedt factory continued to trade until the mid 1920’s, so the tiles date between 1900 and 1925. The palette, which includes green, pink and amber on a white fond is easy on the eye and the strong geometry of the floor makes it an ideal candidate for a hallway or reception area.
Now professionally cleaned of their old mortar and a thick wax the tiles reveal a good ceramic and consistent colours. The small borders, bearing a 'W' inscription, were produced by Winckelmans in Lille, a company who started trading in 1894 and who are still producing tiles now. There is the occasional inconsistent tile in respect of colour amongst the small borders owing to the batch making process but it only adds to the overall charm of the floor and the photographs below of a random sample of the floor are indicative of the whole.
The tiles can be laid inside or outside of the home and may also be used very effectively with underfloor heating systems.
