12m2 / 130 sq ft of classical antique damier floor tiles with heraldic motif
12m2 of antique carreaux de ciments floor tiles, 20cm sq, of a classical French chessboard design. The plain tiles are wheat/beige with the black tiles bearing a heraldic motif, again wheat on a charcoal black fond.
The tiles date c.1910, the date of the house in Troyes, France from where they were recovered.
The floor has been cleaned of it old mortar to the reverse and sides and had old wax removed from the tiles faces. Being carreaux de ciments the tiles can only be laid internally. There are c.173 plain tiles (6.9m2) and 128 heraldic tiles (5.1m2) totaling 12m2.
A simple design endorsing that less is often more.
