11m2+ Classical twin bordered Belgian ceramic floor c.1910
A 11m2+ / 120 sq ft antique ceramic encaustic Belgian floor with its complete back to back border tiles, dated c.1910. The floor has been recovered from a house close to Namur in Belgium and the reverse of the tiles are marked with an ‘H’, being Gilliot Hemiksem.
The design of the 14cm sq tiles is classical in a theme of two motifs; a raised compass star and an ornate cross. The palette is cool in charcoal, grey and off white, with royal blue detailing and the back to back borders again are strongly geometrical. All four internal and four external border corner tiles are present. The border tiles can either be laid as a double configuration or as a single one should a longer run be required.
The floor has been cleaned of its old mortar and the faces have cleaned well, revealing consistent colours and a good slip. Some of the tiles have small chips and nibbles expected of a floor of this age but the high resolution photographs below of a section of the floor are representative of the floor generally.
