11m2 of antique French carreaux de ciments floor c.1900

An ornate and richly aged French carreaux de ciments floor of 16cm sq tiles (c.6.5 inches) with its original double lay back to back tiles. The 11m2+ / 118 sq ft floor has been reclaimed from the kitchen of a farmhouse near to Thury, Burgundy and dates from the early part of the twentieth century.

The fond of the tile is a biscuit colour and the motif design, fluid, ornate and very French. Black and brown detailing and piping are contrasted with proud reds and blues.

The tiles have cleaned well and the floor has an aged patina; there are chips and edge nibbles and in some areas there is slip wear (in a small number of cases you can see this in the blue flowers of the main tiles, shown in the photographs below) but this adds character to what is a pretty and clearly old floor. The patina is not at the expense of the quality of the tiles, they are in good condition being 1.5cm thick and more than a kilo in weight each.

Being a ciments tile they can only be relaid inside a house unless there is no risk of freezing and thawing where you live.

The photographs below show the floor drying after cleaning and it will require sealing and/or waxing once laid. Sealing to protect it and/or waxing to lift the colours. This is one floor that we think would look beautiful with a gloss waxing.
