10m2+ / 108 sq ft antique ceramic encaustic with triple border tiles
One of three floors reclaimed from the same period property in Tournai, Belgium built c.1910, this ceramic encaustic floor dating from the early part of the twentieth century has been lifted with its original triple series borders from a reception room and has been restored tile by tile to its original beauty. Having been professionally cleaned, the ceramic of these 15mm thick tiles is excellent with colours as crisp and vibrant as when fired and the detail in the vegetal themed principal field tile design is nothing short of stunning as the high resolution photographs below detail. Within the palette cornflower blue and an off white are dominant but vanilla, leaf green and bordeaux are also present.
Arriving ready to relay the principal 14cm square field tile is framed by a triple border series consisting of a 14cm square border, itself framed top and bottom by a half size 14cm x 7cm lattice themed border for which all 8 corner tiles are present and correct. The floor is in good condition with a small number of tiles bearing edge nibbles or small grout-able chips and being a tiled fired to over 1,100F degrees it lends itself to being laid inside the home (where it will work efficiently with underfloor heating systems) or outside on a patio or in a conservatory or summer house where sub-zero winter temperatures will not damage the tile.
We think this beautiful floor is a real statement piece and one that would benefit from being the hero in any room. It could of course be laid in a much larger area, carpet style, framed by an antique wood, stone or complimentary modern ceramic taking from the floors palette.
