3.5m2 antique ceramic Belgian floor with same size borders..

SOLD  SOLD  SOLD

A small, 3.5m2, Belgian ceramic encaustic floor of 14.5 cm square tiles reclaimed from the connecting passage of two reception rooms in house in Namur. The tiles were manufactured by Societe Chimay in Belgium and we would place their age at around the date of the build of the house, between 1910 and 1920.

The design is angular and geometric with a pleasing tessellation comprising of spokes anchored by a styalized vegetal motif. The lozenge themed borders are more ornate and frame the floor beautifully. There are two border corner tiles available so the missing two will need to be mitre cut when laying the floor should a framing of the floor be desired.

The palette, shared by both the field and border tile, is dark burgundy, mid blue and greys and all present on a white base.

The floor has cleaned very well as the high resolution photographs show, the patina is rich with occasional edge nibbles and small grout-able chips present but the 15mm thick ceramic is excellent and there is no surface wear. Owing to their handmade production there is occasional tonal variation, with particularly the dark burgundy, all adding to their character and charm.

A highly fired tile, they can be laid inside or outside of the home and will work superbly with under-floor heating systems.
