A 13m2 double border Douzies Maubeuge floor c.1920 (CE198)
SOLD SOLD SOLD A 13m2 / 140 sq ft antique French ceramic floor reclaimed from the hallway of a house renovation in the northern port city of Calais, France. Manufactured by Ceramiques Douzies Maubeuge we have included below a scan from their catalogue originally presenting the floor. Unusually these +/- 13mm thick tiles are 12.7cm square, a size we have not come across before and the design tessellation, opening up in tiles of four, is strongly navigational. The field tile is framed by a same size border, laid back to back, primarily in a burnt red. If a longer meterage of border tiles is required they can of course be laid as a single run.
The floor has cleaned superbly revealing sharp colours and a good ceramic with a deep slip. A small number have small chips and edge nibbles, all groutable, and one of the full contingent of eight border corners has a chip. Fired to over 1,100F degrees and with almost zero porosity the tiles are also suited to being laid outside of the home as high summer and sub-zero winter temperatures will not effect their robustness. If laid inside the home as superb retainers and distributors of heat they will work very efficiently with under floor heating systems.
