Large c.26m2, antique Boch Freres ceramic floor with triple borders (CL109)
In the latter stages of its restoration and available soon, one of four floors reclaimed from the same house close to Namur in Belgium, a turn of the century ceramic encaustic floor totaling c.26m2.
Manufactured by Boch Freres, Maubeuge the principal field tile is fluid in its four tile motif tessellation and framed by a triple border series of a same size, 15cm square border and a half border laid in duplicate. The larger border introduces emerald green and mustard to the palette and the double half borders mushroom and beige.
The ceramic is quality; 14mm thick, as expected from one of France's great heritage producers and a rare one in that they are still selling globally now over 150 years later.
The tiles have a charming antique patina; some bear edge nibbles, some small groutable chips but there is no surface wear, colours are consistent and the tiles weigh close to 1kg each. The indicative tile numbers are below by tile type, including the presence of all four large border corners and eight small border corners.
A highly fired tile they can be laid inside or outside of the home and will work very efficiently with underfloor heating systems. Being ceramic and having virtually zero surface porosity they do not require sealing and a regular wash is all that is needed to retain their beauty.
