15.75m2 antique Villeroy and Boch octagon ceramic floor with cabochons - 1946 (CE194)
SOLD SOLD SOLD A 15.75m2 octagon ceramic tiled floor complete with its original border tiles and 7cm square cabochons. The floor was produced in 1946 by the celebrated ceramic house of Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach, western Germany, a town close to both the French and Luxembourg borders and where Villeroy Boch still have their HQ, production and retail facilities. Recovered from a town-house in the Moselle region of north eastern France, close to the German border the floor dates c.1946, making it 66 years old.
The octagon tiles are a very good ceramic; 17cm / 6.7 inches in width/height of a white fond bearing a mid grey rosace and edging. The infilling square cabochons are a solid mid grey fond of a complimentary star design and framing the floor are more ornate 17cm square border tiles, which also introduce burgundy to the palette. The floor has cleaned very well and is in good condition with only a very small number of tiles displaying occasional small groutable chips and side nibbles. All four corner tiles for the border series are present and correct.
This is a classical and subtle floor. Appealing in both its design and its use of octagons with anchoring cabochons it is well suited for laying in an entrance hall as it has a strong navigational flow.
Being a highly fired tile it can be used effectively with underfloor heating systems as well as being laid outside of the home as well as inside.
