13.5m2 antique ceramic floor in a cool green palette (CL29)
SOLD SOLD SOLD A 13.5m2 / 145 sq. ft antique ceramic floor complete with its original triple lay border tiles of one same size border framed by a half size flower head border, laid in duplicate. The floor has been reclaimed from a house built at the turn of the last century in Namur, Belgium and is a classical tessellation, easy on the eye and in a cool palette of sage green, mid blue and yellow on a white fond. The ornate vegetal themed same size border tile brings fluidity and softens the strong geometry of the main field tile. The full contingent of 4 corner tiles for the large border and 8 for the half size borders are present.
The 14.3cm square tiles are 15mm thick and reverse stamped 'CNW'. The inscription ‘CNW’ is an abbreviation for ‘Societe Anonyme Le Ceramique National, Welkenraedt’, a company established at Forges-les-Chimay in 1892 which later opened a subsidiary in Welkenraedt in 1900. The Welkenraedt factory continued to trade until the mid 1920’s, so the tiles date between 1900 and 1925.
The floor has cleaned well of its years of old wax and dirt and arrives ready to relay, displaying a pleasing antique patina as the high resolution photographs below of a random 1.5m2 section of the floor show. Owing to the handmade process of production there is some subtle variation in slip colours, particularly in the same size borders, again as can be seen in the photographs, but this only adds to the charm and individuality of the floor. Being a highly fired ceramic the floor can be laid inside or outside of the home and will work very efficiently with underfloor heating systems.
