Small but bold French antique carreaux de ciments floor with a rich patina c.1900

SOLD  SOLD  SOLD  A small, 7.5m2, antique French carreaux de ciments floor dating from the early 20th century. These 20cm tiles are of a classical geometric French design, common in the period, and framed here by harlequin influenced same size border tiles. The grey fond of the tile gives way to an indulgent palette of reds, yellows, turquoise and white.

The close to 1 inch thick tiles, weighing 1.5 kilos each have been cleaned of their old lime and sand and their faces have been washed with a professional alkaline prior to being given a steam cleaning.

The patina revealed is rich and this is a time worn floor for the purists looking to put lived in period French heritage into their chosen room; tiles display nibbles and grout-able chips and some tiles pitting and some surface crackling. The high resolution photographs show this in rich detail.

Being a carreaux de ciments tile they can only be laid indoors, unless you live in an area where sub-zero temperatures are not an issue and the floor will require sealing at minimum once re-laid, although we feel a high gloss waxing would also really set the colours off.
